I started Self destructing at age 2.

So, Most of you that know me fairly well know that I've bitten my fingernails since I was a baby. I cant help it. I've tryed everything.........I recently went to the Dermatologist because I was worried that I had some kind of nail disease. A couple of my nails are just getting nasty. The dermatologist informed me that I have "SELF DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR" And that I needed to channel that negative energy into "something else".
WOW.... SELF DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR, I guess I hadnt thought of it that way, This guy doesnt even Know me, how can he say such a thing. Does a bad habit mean your self destructing????? I wanted to scream, "YOU DONT KNOW ME DAWG", "GET OFF MY GAME". Anyway I left sort of snickering to myself, I guess I should be on "suicide watch"
Crazy stuff.

  2. Maybe you should take some tips from your daughter who has finally broken the cursed cycle! Yeah for Brianna and no more fingernail biting! Jackie...maybe you could switch to biting toe nails since they are less often seen in public and therefore it would be much less noticable. Flexibility would be required, however, so start stretching today! You Neva Eva tol' me you have self destructive behaviors!! Ha!! What a joke.
P.S. Your oldest brother has it too! Hee Hee

You guys are all hysterical...Kellie I never knew you were such a psychologist, but wouldnt snapping my wrist with a rubber band be sort of "self destuctive" behavior also???, Actually I like the eyebrow petting idea, I dont think the "derm" people would see you for that, you'd need to set up an appointment with psychiatry. HEE HEE. Oh and Cindy, I cant reach my toe nails with my mouth, I can only Pick them, but good idea :) Thank you all for your therapy on-line.

    Nail-Biting

    Topic Overview

Nail-biting may occur with other body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRP) such as hair-pulling or skin-picking.

What treatments are available for nail-biting?
Several treatment measures may help you stop biting your nails. Some focus on behavior changes and some focus on physical barriers to nail-biting.

Keep your nails trimmed and filed. Taking care of your nails can help reduce your nail-biting habit and encourage you to keep your nails attractive.
Have a manicure regularly or use nail polish. Men can use a clear polish. Wearing artificial nails may stop you from biting your nails and protect them as they grow out.
Try stress-management techniques if you bite your nails because you are anxious or stressed.
Paint a bitter-tasting polish, such as CONTROL-IT or Thum, on your nails. The awful taste will remind you to stop every time you start to bite your nails.
Try substituting another activity, such as drawing or writing or squeezing a stress ball or silly putty, when you find yourself biting your nails. If you keep a record of nail-biting, you will become more aware of the times when you bite your nails and be able to stop the habit.
Wear gloves, adhesive bandages, or colored stickers whenever possible to remind you not to bite your nails.
Snap a rubber band on the inside of your wrist when you start to bite your nails so you have a negative physical response to nail-biting.

  6. I used to bite my nails and my mom would slap my hand every time it went anywhere near my mouth...then I got braces and that sort of cured it. How about getting a huge mouth guard like hockey players wear so you can't bite them?
