Coffee = headache

Why do you think it is, that almost every time I drink this....

... I need to pre-medicate with this

because I almost always get a headache ?

I'd Love to hear what you think..

Heres the facts...
  • Any kind of coffee gives me a headache (regular or decaf)
  • Chocolate doesn't give me a headache
  • I only drink coffee about 5 times a week, never make it at home unless i have company, so I'm obviously not addicted.
  • Caffinated pop doesn't phase me.

My favorite drink is a Light Chocolate/Raspbery Latte at Caribou

I like it enough to drink it and then have a headache.

and NO I really dont want to give it up....

It's something I look forward to while I do my reading and journaling in the mornings.

So I'm curious to hear what you think...
Got any thoughts about why I'm plagued with
the dreaded "coffee headache"?

  1. Maybe there's more caffeine in coffee than chocolate? But then you get one with decaf too...I googled some stuff, but I have no answers for you!

  3. No sugar in black coffee Cheri, and plain old blac coffee is probably my worst enemy.

The syrups I use are sugar-free also

    It was good thought

maybe it's stress let-down- you know- you are so excited for your coffee, and then when it is over, it's the let-down effect that causes the headache??? I get headaches all the time after big events (tests, working charge nurse, my wedding day, birthdays, etc)

  6. Well... Here's a few things i found. I don't know AJ. the fact that you don't have it very often could be the very reason you get the headaches? I don't know...interesting....

A headache caffeine connection – The Bad News
Many of the things that can help can also hinder. As a stimulant, especially combined with sugar, caffeine can pick you up but may also drop you quickly. One of the worst things a migraine prone person can do it to take in large amounts of sugar and caffeine on an empty stomach, which can make you blood sugar levels do some pretty wild things, and may stimulate that caffeine headache. In other words, if you're stopping for tea, don't forget the crumpets!

As a diuretic, caffeine may also rob your body of some of the things it really needs. For example, research is showing that migraine sufferers may need to increase the amounts of magnesium in their bodies. But caffeine may be taking it out of your body when you're trying to put it in!

What caffeine does to your blood vessels may be good and bad too. Although it may help to constrict your blood vessels, the headache caffeine connection may be in the way it can backfire and also start expanding them!

The addictive nature of caffeine related to the way it acts on the blood vessels may cause the worst problems. "Weekend headache" is often caused when someone drinks a couple cups of coffee every morning at work, and then sleeps in during the weekend. Since most of us don't drink coffee while we sleep, the withdrawal can trigger a migraine.

Medications add to the problem – combining aspirin with coffee, or drugs containing caffeine, can heighten the bad effects.

Caffeine may also cause unneeded anxiety, especially if taken in large quantities and without proper food and sleep. Stress can lower your "resistance" to migraine triggers, and compounded with the steady drip of the coffee pot your stress may be much worse!

    AND THEN...

While ingesting coffee for headaches may help in the short run, coffee lowers magnesium levels, so in the long run this solution may do more harm than good. I rarely drink coffee, but if I do have a cup one day, then the next day I have to have at least a half a cup or I get a headache from the blood flow to my head increasing.

  8. Thanks Megan, but it's still a mystery to my why I dont get headaches whenever I drink other caffinated beveraged. I probably have atleast 2 diet pepsi's a day (with caffine) Maybe it's just the amount of caffine in coffee is more than in soda...hummmmm
who knows...lots of good thoughts though.

  9. The amount of caffeine in coffee IS WAY more than sodas. I can drink a can of soda at night and not be affected but one small cup of coffee after 7:00pm and I'm in for a long night of sleeplessness! I don't get the part about the caffiene free coffee though. Even thought it's caffeine free there is still a slight amount in there (so I'm told). I wouldn't think it would be enough to cause the headache though. Hmmm.... mystery!
